I believe that Squires Garden Centres may now have sold their Maidenhead Rd site. Squires have said previously that they wanted to expand their business but couldn’t do so within their current site. This is their commercial decision to make.
It is likely that any new owners will make an application in the coming months to RBWM to build on the site. Although it is on green belt land it has been built upon previously.
Having lived in this area for more than 25 years I have always known a garden centre on this site. It’s a great shame that Squires are going especially for their staff and suppliers.
Squires cafe is used as a meeting place for many residents. Dedworth needs more community facilities with or without our garden centres. In my view RBWM should not establish facilities to rival commercial operators, but now that the future of the Squires site is becoming clearer I can confirm that a new community café will be proposed for Dedworth. This will probably be built on council land, but will be run by a private operator.
More details about this project will be made available before the end of the year, but if you have any thoughts on how this could work please get in touch.
